• Phoenix Group consolidates books of life assurance from other companies. It isn’t a bad business per se but there is no growth. It can be bought for an income portfolio especially when the shares are out of favour but it can nbever be a Wonder Stock.

• Intercede Group: this is a vaguely techy business but very much old technology. It is involved in cybersecurity and has never really generated much return for shareholders. There is also a non-specific threat from AI.

• Diageo: At time of writing, Diageo looks very cheap. Probably as cheap as it has ever been however, there are good reasons for this supposed cheapness. You can make a case for an investment if you’re comfortable that the business is fixable but it requries hope. Even were it to regain its lost luste, we would suspect that the returns would still fall short of Wonderful.

• SRT Marine Systems is a fine business in its niche. Unfortunately, it’s niche is too small to ever really generate the required growth needed. One could easily foresee it being acquired by a larger company one day.

• Rathbones Group operates in an industry that is suffering. The regulator’s push for lower fees and the rise of super-cheap alternatives is hurting the whole industry. Perhaps if the shares become cheap enought there is a trading opportunity for those savvy enough, but it is far from the requirements of a Wonder Stock.

• Costain Group builds infrastructure projects. INtheory these business can be good, especially during a period of high infrastructure investment. Sadly Costain has lurched from crisis to crisis. It might well be much better today but we would suggest only those close to the industry own this one and even then, probably not for the long-term.

• Inspired: this is a bold name for a company that is so uninspiring. It was actually taken over last year but seems to exist on the market still. Even it was Wonderful, it can’t be bought anymore.

• Fonix Mobile is one of the many companies that allow businesses to charge via mobile payments through a mobile carrier. Twenty years ago it seemed like a new and exciting area for growth. Today, there are so many very innovative payments businesses that this is just a dull, possibly-threated ex-growth business.

• Rank Group has been around forever destroying shareholder value. Just rubbish. One day private equity will probably take it over and squeeze whatever value is left in here out.

• On the Beach: this is a fine business but it solves for a problem that others had already done so well. It came to the market with fanfare but that has faded to leave a low-growth company in a competitive landscape.

Summary: Of these ten companies reviewed, none meet Wonder Stocks’ rigorous criteria for further investigation. Our high standards mean few businesses will stand out, but the search for exceptional investments continues.

Companies Not Worth Further Review:

• Phoenix Group is a solid enough business and a perfectly adequate investment for those seeking high dividend income but it’s not good enough for us.

• Intercede Group also seems to have to invest heavily to stay on top of current technology. One wonders whether the advent of AI might be a technology too far.

• Diageo: there is a general consensus emerging that the drinks businesses are because of fat loss drugs, younger people not drinking, more health conciousness etc. This has very much taken the shine off these types of business. It could be for the right individual a perfectly sound investment but unless it is bargain basement, it is unlikely to ever be a Wonder Stock.

• SRT Marine Systems is an OK business but the problem with niches is that they are necessarily small. This doesn’t leave a lot of room for growth.

• Rathbones Group: this whole sector is having issues. The regulator is hammering the prices they can charge and increasing cost of compliance. Traders might like it when it is cheap enough, but the industry’s best days are behind it.

• Costain Group: there are decent contractors out there,. which have compounded at very high rates. It is not impossible that Costain of the future might be one. It is however highly improbable.

• Inspired looked like a pretty average business when I was researching it. Then it got taken over. Someone saw something in it but not me.

• Fonix Mobile: this might be better than Boku, which was one of the very first of this series we did. At the time I thought it might warrant further work but actually, these businesses are spent growth stories that could be threatened by new technology.

• Rank Group: over the last thirty years Rank has lost 80% of its value. Not spectacularly just death by a thousand cuts. Crap.

• On the Beach is a bit of a Johnny-come-lately to online travel agents. It’s not new, it s not unique and its probably not as good as the competition.

Summary: Of these ten companies reviewed, ten don’t meet Wonder Stocks’ rigorous criteria for further investigation. Our high standards mean few businesses will stand out, but the search for exceptional investments continues.

• Vertu Motors: Selling cars is getting harder for retailers. The products are becoming very expensive making it harder for consumers to justify buying cars. Moreover, more of the value is being captured by technology providers to the sector like Autotrader. Finally, if automous cars ever become viable, this kind of business could go the way of the dodo.

• Arrow Exploration: This is a business that shouldn’t be listed in the UK. It is headquartered in Canada and operates in Colombia as an oil explorer and producer. It’s a lottery ticket. Most lottery tickets expire worthless.

• Speedy Hire: At time of writing, this could be cheap. Especially if the UK’s much hoped-for construction recovery happens. Thus, it could be an interesting speculation. We are not speculators though and this is not the stock for us.

• Severfield: This has quite similar economics to Speedy Hire and the conclusion is the same.

• Gran Tierra Energy: See Arrow Exploration but add in Ecuador for a little bit of excitement. Nope.

• Thor Explorations: Yet another Canadian headquartered basic resources play. This time we shift over to Nigeria and Senegal and are looking for gold instead of oil. Mark Twain once said ‘a mine is a hole in the ground with a liar on top’. Another dodgy foreign lottery ticket.

• Spirent Communications: Reading the description of this business you might think it is a new business, in a technology area that is seeing high growth. It is in fact the exact opposite. It has been a very lacklustre performer for decades now and it would be a very bold bet that it is the kind of business that is about to become a super high return business.

• Andrews Sykes: This is not a Wonder Stock, but someone ought to make a film about the life of its founder, Tony ‘Jacques’ Murray. It would make a nice change from the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Stocks worth a little more work but probably aren’t interesting:

• Eagle Eye Solutions: This is a business that helps retailers generate real-time, personalised promotions, digital gift cards, and loyalty programmes. It’s quite clever and has recently turned positive. It looks very expensive but operational gearing and high growth could see earnings grow very rapidly. The downside is that it is involved in the enshittification of the economy. Still it might be worth further work at some point.

Summary: Of these ten companies reviewed, nine don’t meet Wonder Stocks’ rigorous criteria for further investigation, while only one shows modest potential but need more scrutiny and is low priority. Our high standards mean few businesses will stand out, but the search for exceptional investments continues.
